Windows 10 will auto update and auto download. If you have a cap or limit on your data plan, and you are using your phone as a hotspot, you should make sure to meter your internet connection.
Scenario: You phone is not rooted, giving you access to your hotspot capability at no charge. You have an unlimited data plan with sprint, and you pay an extra amount to use your phone as a hotspot that only comes with 2gb of data. You turn on your hotspot, let your notebook connect to your hotspot, and later that day you get a notification from sprint telling you that you've used your 2gb of mobile hotspot allowance. Say what?? How the heck did that happen?
Your notebook probably downloaded windows updates that will be installed later and you burned through all your data allowance. BOO!!!!
Before this happens to you, connect to your phone hotspot, and in your windows 10 notebook search bar at the bottom left hand side of your screen, type in
WIRELESS INTERNET CONNECTION
Look at the SSID to make sure you are connected to your phone hotspot, and turn the metered connection ON
"Set as metered connection" will be in the off position at first, so make sure to turn it on.
Now anytime you connect to your phone mobile hotspot, your notebook will know that it is on a metered network.
Hint: When your notebook connects to a regular wifi network (like at home), it won't be metered and all your updates will happen as normal. You just want to prevent the updates from downloading automatically on your limited data plan on your mobile hotspot.
